Owens Community College fires up its own 'Harlem Shake'

Owens Community College sophomore pitcher Dane Davis had the once in a lifetime chance to kick his baseball coach square in the chest on video.

The athletic department last week made its own "Harlem Shake" video/dance to add to the thousands of videos that are part of the recent "Harlem Shake" Internet craze.

"Harlem Shake" has erupted in popularity recently. Dance videos on YouTube have gone viral with "Harlem Shake," a bass-heavy, hip-hop track with no lyrics. Owens' athletic department made its own at the college's basketball arena last week on Owens' campus in Perrysburg Township.

Mr. Davis, a right-handed pitcher, was dressed as Leonidas from the movie 300. In that movie Leonidas kicks a messenger in the same fashion as Mr. Davis did to his coach. There were some differences, of course, including that Owens baseball head coach Devin Taylor was dressed in a bunny costume.

"We thought it would be funny if he kicked the bunny in the hole like the movie," said Rudy Yovich, Owens athletic director. "That is one of my favorite movies, I loved that. I think it made the video."

Mr. Yovich was the mastermind behind putting together a video. He had his whole office staff and many athletes in the video that was shot last week. It took about 30 minutes to shoot.

"The week before we did it I started seeing these videos of [Harlem Shake] and I thought they were great," Mr. Yovich said. "My favorite one is Jeff Gordon's with his pit crew."

These viral videos have become famous recently with many different teams and organizations putting their own twist to it. In the videos there is one person, usually masked, who is dancing at the beginning of the video and either no one around him or some people who are not paying attention. Then when the beat hits, the video changes to a shot with a big group of people in the same area dancing and having fun, usually with props and costumes. That is the point in the video when Mr. Davis was allowed to "kick" his head coach.

"We like to have fun with each other," Mr. Yovich said. "It was a good time."
