Perrysburg Township Trustees approve contract for asbestos removal from Lime City School

Perrysburg Township Trustees have given unanimous approval for contracts to remove asbestos from the shuttered Lime City School and then raze the building approved 3-0 for the abestos abatement and building demolition of Lime City School $33,377.

Midwest Environment Control, Inc., of Toledo, will do the asbestos abatement for $13,700, while Marko Demolition and Crushing LLC, of Genoa, submitted the $19,677 low bid for the demolition.

Walter Celley, the Perrysburg Township administrator, said he called Marko to double-check its price because four competing bids were considerably higher -- all the way up to $51,500.

"Remarkable," Mr. Celley said of the price. "And we checked out the company and they appear fine. They've done several other big jobs."

A schedule for the work remains to be determined, pending meetings with the contractors, Mr. Celley said.

The trustees also voted to move a shelter house in the parking lot behind the administration building to the Lime City site once it is cleared. The large shelter could fit many picnic tables under it.

A price estimate of $9,825 would include moving and re-securing the structure, site clean-up, and adding picnic tables, a sign, and garbage cans. The shelter now stands about 100 yards from its proposed new location.

Mr. Celley said he and Bob Warnimont, the township maintenance, had "talked for a while about a better plan to relocate it," Mr. Celley said. "It gives the township a visible facility with a good parking and a dual use."

The dual use is because Mr. Warnimont is looking into replacing the baseball backstop at the field behind the school.

Lime City School closed in 1990, when it last held Rossford Schools kindergarten classes in its four rooms.

The shelter relocation will be done at no net cost to the township, Mr. Celley explained, because the township holds a $9,825 grant from Wood County for a new shelter and county officials have approved using that money to move the existing structure and beautifying its new site.

"We will still develop a master plan for the property in the foreseeable future," he said. "This wouldn't conflict with that because it is on the far edge of the property."
