Instead of adding four school days to the end of the year, Perrysburg Schools officials plan to have two "blizzard bag" days during spring break and use two previously scheduled day-off Fridays to make up for snow days.

Superintendent Tom Hosler said he's had parents tell him not to cut into spring break and not to cut into summer days off. He went with a balanced plan that gives students assignments during spring break, one day into summer, and claims nine excused calamity days allowed by the state.

Perrysburg Schools have missed 13 days so far this school year -- seven were used in January and two were last week.

A few years ago, "blizzard bag" days were approved to help schools make up days off without having students come in to school. For those, homework is sent home and the state allows those to be counted as teaching days. With vacations planned by parents for spring break the week of March 31, Mr. Hosler thought "blizzard bags" days would be best used April 1 and 2.

"We send work home either online or on paper and if the assignments are complete it counts as an instructional day," Mr. Hosler said. "Students are marked absent if they don't turn it in."

The other two makeup days will be May 23, which was planned to be an off day heading into the Memorial Day weekend, and June 6, which was after the scheduled school year was to end.

"I like this," said Sue Larimer, a Perrysburg school member. "Blizzard bags seem like a great way to do it. The staff needs a plan."

The Board of Education approved by a 5-0 vote the school administration's plan to address the makeup days. Mr. Hosler acknowledged the district could incur further off days yet this winter.

If there is another calamity day used, elementary schools would have to make up a day on June 9, while the junior high and high school would add another blizzard bag day. Any more school closings would add days into the second week of June.

"We're not out of the woods yet," Mr. Hosler said.
