Back to school shopping will need to be done a few days sooner in Perrysburg this summer as the district has adopted a new calendar for the 2014-15 school year.
The new calendar, approved by the Perrysburg Board of Education this week, shows school beginning on Wednesday, Aug. 20, three weekdays earlier than has been typical. The last day for the 2014-2015 school year will be Thursday, May 28.
Superintendent Tom Hosler told school board members this week that a retirement incentive means up to 40 Perrysburg teachers will retire this school year or next. Those retiring next year will not be able to work past May 31, under the state program, so the new schedule ensures substitute teachers won't be needed to administer exams to students in the last few days of school.
The new schedule also lines up high school exams before winter break. It will end what has happened, where students have two weeks off for winter break and soon after they return in January have semester exams to take. Starting next year, exams will be Dec. 17 to 19, when winter break will begin. Students will return from the break on Jan. 6.
The 2015-2016 schedule will be similar to next year's, with school starting Aug. 19, and letting out May 26.
