What began with the Perrysburg High School girls sports dominating the Northern Lakes League in the fall has continued to other sports.

The Yellow Jackets boys and girls teams won 10 NLL titles before spring sports began. High school Athletic Director Ray Pohlman says that is the most titles ever for this point of the school year for Perrysburg.

"I've never seen this before; it has been a crazy year," said Perrysburg football coach Matt Kregel.

Perrysburg girls won cross country, golf, soccer, volleyball, and tennis league championships in the fall and boys won the NLL football title. So far this winter, Perrysburg boys and girls basketball teams won the league titles, as did boys wrestling and girls swimming teams. Mr. Pohlman said Perrysburg typically wins three or four NLL titles a year, but won seven in 2008.

"I think you have to credit the youth programs," Mr. Pohlman said. "They have a lot of input from our coaches. Kids are playing football, basketball, tennis, and golf at young ages."

Besides youth programs, he credits coaches, community support, and funding, and the junior high school athletic director Roger Frank. Mr. Kregel thinks a lot of the success has started with Mr. Pohlman.

"Ray deserves a lot of credit," Mr. Kregel said. "His plan was to keep kids in Perrysburg with good facilities and coaches. Obviously Ray has done as much to Perrysburg's (athletic) success as anyone."

The Perrysburg football team was undefeated in the NLL and won its first every playoff game last fall. Todd Sims helped coach the football team and was the head coach for the girls basketball team, which easily won the NLL. He said the senior class has a lot to do with the success.

"I always say you are only as good as your seniors," Mr. Sims said. "You mix in juniors and sophomores in each sport, but the seniors have been excellent."

Mr. Kregel said the success hasn't just been in athletics, but this 2014 class has worked hard and been successful on and off the field. He said it has been fun to watch the athletes move from one sport to another, keeping the energy and bonding from the football field to basketball court.

"We're expecting a couple more championships in the spring too," Mr. Pohlman said. "It has been a fun ride."
