Pat Maust, Youth Services coordinator at Way Public Library, retired on Friday.
Known to children as "Miss Pat,” she has dedicated her professional life to instilling a love of reading and learning in children.
Her greatest satisfaction, she said, comes from matching a child with that one special book which will ignite his or her interest in reading for a lifetime.
“There’s a perfect match for each child,“ Ms. Maust said, “and finding it and seeing the child’s reaction to it are a joy to behold.”
During her tenure at the library, she has expanded children’s programming by developing “after hours” family events to coincide with the release of new books in the Harry Potter series and the highly-anticipated annual Snow Ball Family Fun Night. She is also responsible for the Fun Library After School Happenings and the Home School program geared toward connecting the home schooling community with library resources.
Of all of her contributions to the library, Ms. Maust said, she is most pleased that she was able to initiate “Baby Time,” a play group and story session for parents and their children aged 6-11 months.
“ ‘Miss Pat’ has been a joy to work with these past several years," Way Library director Janel Haas said.
“ 'Miss Pat' took a great children’s program to the next level with her programming ideas and her inclusion of the home schooling program. She will definitely be missed.”
Ms. Maust came to Way Library in 2005, after earning her Master of Library Science degree from Kent State University, and oversees the children’s, juvenile, and young adult departments.
She began her career as a librarian in a middle school in Austintown, Ohio, followed by stints in public libraries in Grand Ledge, Mich., and Youngstown.
