On Thursday a gala ribbon cutting for Interrupt Marketing was held at the Maplewood Marketplace in downtown Sylvania. Interrupt Marketing is a great addition to downtown Sylvania and brings new jobs and activity to the growing business atmosphere downtown.
The ribbon cutting also marks the completion of remodeling the Maplewood Marketplace into commercial spaces. The building was purchased by the city during Mayor James Seney’s administration in the early 1990’s. City council approved remodeling of the old, unused and unsightly car dealership on the northwest corner of Main Street and Maplewood on Sept. 7, 1997 to bring more economic activity and life to our downtown.
A $175,000 state grant helped pay some of the remodeling cost. The remodeled building opened in the second half of 1998 with all remodeled spaces leased. Tenants included a restaurant, an interior designer, a gift store, a jeweler, a tailor and a professional office. The rear garage area of the building was not remodeled and was later leased to a glass blowing artist, who constructed a glass furnace in the space. As interest and activity in downtown Sylvania grew, the tenants in the remodeled building areas often changed, but the building remained largely occupied.
Last year, Sylvania received inquiries about the un-remodeled garage space at the west end of the building. By the second half of last year, the city had negotiated a lease with Interrupt Marketing to occupy the space once it was improved to meet their office needs. Parking in the new city lot behind the two recently purchased duplexes north of the Maplewood Marketplace was also required. The results are terrific. The remodeled space is beautiful, and about 20 new jobs have been added to our downtown.
Sylvania has previously assisted in the redevelopment of other downtown sites, and has owned at one time the old post office, now a legal office, the old Howard Gas and Oil site, now the Wingate Hotel and River Centre Park, and the former Carroll Motors sites, now the office building occupied by Root Learning and the River Centre Clinic across the street. Currently, the city is working to redevelop the SOMO (South of Monroe Street) area from the Wingate Hotel east to the north branch of Ten Mile Creek.
Sylvania is a great place to be and our downtown business activity is growing. Interrupt Marketing is a great addition to the downtown and the jobs they bring will benefit our restaurants and stores, and encourage more businesses to locate in Sylvania.
