Watch what you eat to have a healthy, happy New Year

In just a few days, we will say goodbye to 2012 and usher in the New Year.

And with it will go all the holiday overeating. That is, if we can make it through the New Year’s celebration without overdoing it.

Whether you are ringing in the New Year at an intimate party at home or venturing out, here are some tips to help guide you through even the most challenging party temptations.

  • Never go to a party hungry. It’s important to eat something before the party. Don’t skip breakfast, have regular balanced meals. Even though you know your friend is making her famous dish, don’t starve yourself in order to fit it in. Eating before the party means that you are less likely to overeat or make unhealthy food choices.
  • Indulge in no-and low-calorie drinks. It’s not a New Year’s party without champagne. But don’t forget that can add a lot of calories to your celebration. Feel free to fill up on no-and low calorie options like Diet Coke, Coke Zero, or holiday punch made with fresh fruit.
  • Enjoy the fruit and vegetable tray. My rule is to always fill your plate with at least 50 percent fruits and veggies. This keeps you full and the calorie count low.
  • Use a smaller plate and move the party out of the kitchen. When you are socializing it’s natural to lose track of what and how much you have eaten. By using a smaller plate you decrease the amount you are eating. Also, don’t congregate in the kitchen or around the food table. Keep the party moving to avoid overeating.
  • Sneak in a little extra physical activity to burn off calories. Try dancing or other games that involve moving to complete your party.
  • Bring a healthy dish or beverage to share. This guarantees there’s a healthy choice even if the host is not cooking light.

Sticking to these tips will mean that you don’t deprive yourself of fun and you can ring in the New Year without the weight gain. And don’t forget to go easy on yourself in the New Year.  Make sensible and realistic resolutions that will allow room for your favorites and that still allow you to meet your goals.

Cheers to a Happy New Year!
