Beginning this weekend, the doors of four area libraries, including the Sylvania Branch, will open their doors to patrons for Sunday hours.

The promise to restore Sunday hours was made during campaigning for the passage of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library operating levy. With passage of the 5-year, 2.9-mill library operating levy on the November ballot, the system has carried through on its promise to bring back the additional weekend day of service.

In Sylvania, branch manager Sue Schafer said the change will help more people use the library.

“Many people are busy during the week, and Sunday is the best day for them to use the library. Students will be able to do research and work on assignments,” she said.

Other benefits include more time for patrons to work on resumes and job applications.

Sunday hours were eliminated in 2009 as a result of state budget cuts coupled with a drop in property tax valuations. But that doesn't mean visitors stopped talking about the possibility of bringing back the Sunday hours.

“Customers have frequently expressed an interest in resuming the Sunday hours,” Ms.  Schafer said. “Thanks to the support of our loyal customers, we are very happy to restore Sunday hours.”

The branch will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. each Sunday. The other locations that will now be open on the same day and same time include the Main Library, Heatherdowns, Oregon, and Sanger. The Sanger Branch Library has been the only library in the system to be open on Sunday for the last three years.

The Sylvania Branch Library is located at 6749 Monroe St.
