Northview graduate appointed to U.S. Naval Academy

James D'Onofrio graduated in 2012

WASHINGTON – Sen. Sherrod Brown (D., Ohio) announced that the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., has extended an offer of appointment to Sylvania Northview High School graduate James D’Onofrio.

“Ohio schools are educating the young people who will become the next generation of military leaders. I am proud that James has been offered the opportunity to attend one of our nation’s most prestigious institutions,” said Mr. Brown, who nominated Mr. D'Onofrio in January.

“Mr. D’Onofrio’s family and the entire Sylvania community should be proud of this dynamic young man, who embodies the integrity and courage needed to represent well and uphold the values of our nation.”

Mr. D'Onofrio graduated from Northview in 2012 and is studying at the University of Toledo. He graduated from high school with a 3.75 GPA, and was a member of the Sea Cadets, National Honor Society, marching band, lacrosse and cross country team, German club, and Science Olympiads.

Each year, Mr. Brown nominates up to 10 students for each available spot in national military service academies requiring congressional recommendations. A nomination does not guarantee acceptance, but is submitted to the academy’s admissions board for approval.

The nominations are based on the recommendation of a Service Academy Selection Advisory Committee assembled by Mr. Brown. This committee, comprised of former academy graduates, parents of academy attendees, and community leaders from throughout the state, conducts interviews before selecting the final candidates.
