Sylvania resident Todd Crandell, a recovering drug addict, is raising money to cover the $20,000 in publishing costs of his second book, There’s More Than One Way to Get to Cleveland.

Mr. Crandell’s mother died when he was a toddler, and that loss led him to despair and drugs.

However, he eventually became determined to be sober and channeled his energy into improving himself mentally and physically. In 1999, he competed in his first Ironman Triathlon, and since has been dedicating his life to helping addicts rebuild their lives through athletics.

He founded the support group Racing for Recovery, and today he is a licensed addiction counselor and friend to those in need.

Published in 2006, his first book, Racing for Recovery: From Addict to Ironman, looked at his life from addiction to drugs and alcohol to recovery to becoming an endurance athlete. The second book documents the personal accounts of addiction, humiliation, recovery, and hope shared by 10 recovering addicts which are the centerpiece of Racing for Recovery support group.

It provides an alternative to the 12-Step programs used by groups like Alcoholics Anonymous.

“I’m not saying that groups like AA don’t work,” said Mr. Crandell, a licensed chemical dependency counselor. “But the 12 steps definitely don’t work for everyone."

The 155-page book is available only through and costs $8.49 each. He has raised $4,950 already toward the publishing costs of the book. Proceeds go toward the Racing for Recovery group.
