This property on Erie Street at Centennial Road has been approved to be annexed from Sylvania Township into the City of Sylvania.
The Lucas County Commissioners approved the annexation on Tuesday of the Village Farm Dairy property where a Sunoco gas station into the City of Sylvania.
The property on the southeast corner of Erie Street and Centennial Road has been in Sylvania Township.
The city initiated the request to annex the 1.7 acres which includes two parcels at 8275 and 8269 Erie St.
Leslie Brinning, city law director, said the county commissioners approved the request. The property is in the city water district.
“When they built the gas station in 1998 the owner requested to be in the city water district,” she said.
When township property owners request to be placed in the city’s water district, Ms. Brinning said, they must sign an agreement that the city could annex the site at any time.
“It costs a lot to provide the water infrastructure and as city residents they will receive cheaper water rates,” she said about the city’s decision to act on the agreement years later.
The annexation petition was received by the county in December. It was signed by Village Farm Dairy executive Don Kowalski. The company, located on Alexis Road, operates In & Out Marts.
John Zeitler, township administrator, attended the commissioners' meeting. The township did not contest the annexation petition, he said.
“After speaking with our legal counsel, the township has no legal recourse,” he said.
The township has 30 days to appeal the request. If it is uncontested, the city has to wait at least 60 days before it can accept the property.
