A brief history lesson of Sylvania will be depicted in a colorful mural to be painted on a downtown building this summer.
The Sylvania Community Arts Commission sought permission to install the street art on the back of the Interrupt Marketing building at 5703 Main Street. The city’s Board of Architectural Review approved the mural at a meeting this week, and organizers hope to have it in place by mid-summer.
The mural, which will try to connect the city's past with the present, illustrates the Lathrop House representing its role in the Underground Railroad, the historic train depot, which dates back to the mid-1800s, and shows in current time the a female golfer to represent the annual LPGA's Marathon Classic tournament at Highland Meadows Country Club.
The arts commission, Downtown Sylvania Association, Sylvania Chamber of Commerce, and Interrupt Marketing chose resident Dani Fuller’s artwork to be placed on the back of the city-owned building.
Ms. Fuller, creative art director for the River Centre Foundation in Sylvania, an organization dedicated to combating eating disorders, explained that Sylvania-born, renowned photographer Sam Abell was an inspiration for the project.
The mural pays tribute to the National Geographic photographer, positioning him in the right corner taking photos of the city scene she created, which incorporates its beloved trees into the landscape.
“His light source was stars, and my understanding is the passengers of the Underground Railroad also used stars for guidance … It is the history of Sylvania all in one,” she said.
The mural will wrap around the side and back of the building that is about 15 feet high. It will have combined length of more than 50 feet. The main viewing area of the mural will be placed on the northern wall, facing the Historical Village, allowing visitors to view Sylvania’s historical timeline.
The estimated cost for supplies is $500 and will be funded by the Sylvania arts commission and the Downtown Sylvania Association. Interrupt Marketing also will contribute supplies, Mrs. Archer said.
Ms. Fuller will use acrylic paint for the street piece, and will paint it with the help of volunteers.
