Roundabout opening delayed for Sylvania-Metamora, Mitchaw

Motorists will have to wait about a week before they can use the Sylvania-Metamora and Mitchaw roads intersection.

The Lucas County Engineers issued a statement saying the intersection closure will be extended until Wednesday evening.

The three-way intersection in Sylvania Township was closed July 7 to allow a 45-day build for a new roundabout. It was expected to open on Thursday. The intersection formerly required northbound and southbound motorists on Mitchaw to stop for the two-way traffic on Sylvania-Metamora Road.

Ron Myers, county traffic operations engineer, said the delay was granted because “unexpected poor soft soil” was found when the existing pavement was removed.

He said additional measures were taken to stabilize the grounds. Also, delays were caused by heavy rains earlier in the month, which delayed the concrete work.

The new traffic circle, constructed by Geddis Paving of Toledo, will handle increased traffic in the area by keeping traffic flowing in all directions. The project’s estimated cost, mostly covered by state and federal funds, is $1.045 million.

During construction, motorists have been rerouted using Kilburn Road to Brint Road, or Centennial Road to Brint Road to Mitchaw or Kilburn.
