Bond set at $100,000 for female bank robber suspect

Diona Ellis

A North Toledo woman was arraigned Wednesday on a charge of aggravated robbery for the holdup Tuesday night of a Sylvania Township bank.

Bond for Diona Ellis, 26, of 231 Amber Ct., was set at $100,000 today at Sylvania Municipal Court by Judge Scott Ramey. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. July 16. The charge is a first-degree felony and carries a penalty of three to five years in prison and a fine up to $20,000.

As of Wednesday, Ms. Ellis did not post bond and remains in custody at the Lucas County Jail.

Ms. Ellis is accused of robbing the Woodforest Bank inside the Walmart on Central Avenue at about 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, police said. No weapon was seen by the teller, police said. Cash was taken and recovered, Sylvania Township Deputy Chief Ray Carroll said, but he declined to disclose the amount.

It was not clear whether the suspect fled on foot or in a vehicle. However, about an hour later, Sylvania Township police arrested the suspect. She was in a car with her two children and a relative at Dorr Street, near Richards Road in West Toledo. The relative was driving the vehicle. Police said the other parties in the car are not suspects in the case.

Deputy Chief Carroll would not comment on how Ms. Ellis was located.

Federal charges have not been filed. Vicki Anderson, FBI special agent, said township police are taking the lead on the case and will determine whether federal charges will be filed.
