A musical salute, performed in Sylvania today by local orchestras and choir, honored those who have served to protect and preserve freedoms in the United States. And, too, the Veterans Day event recognized those who have sacrificed for the good of mankind in service to their country.

Area veterans were the honored guests during the community event at Southview High School on Sylvania Avenue. The Sylvania Community Orchestra, with the orchestra and choir from Southview High School, presented the special musical concert.

From the opening “Fanfare For the Common Man” to the closing strains of John Phillips Sousa’s immortal march, “let music swell the breeze and ring from all the trees sweet freedom’s song," the program helped remind attendees of the message "Lest We Forget."

Also scheduled on the program: a side-by-side orchestra performance of the words penned by Francis Scott Key 200 ago. Also on tap were the two stirring movements of Gustav Holst’s “The Planets,” and the stirring tribute to honor all veterans, a "Song For the Unsung Hero."
