The Ohio High School Athletic Association in conjunction with Sylvania Schools has suspended Southview football coach Jim Mayzes for recruiting.

Mayzes, who may have violated the school's probation from a past recruiting violation he committed, was not allowed to coach in Friday's game against Bowling Green and will be out again next week when the Cougars play at Anthony Wayne. The suspension went into effect Thursday.

The violation occurred two weeks ago when Mayzes entertained a conversation with a prospective student athlete and his family. A family member first contacted Mayzes by phone before meeting with him in person. Per OHSAA rules, Mayzes should have directed the student to Southview's principal or its enrollment office. The student has since enrolled at Southview but is not yet playing football, according to district superintendent Dr. Brad Rieger.

Rieger said Mayzes "didn't intentionally hide" the meeting and informed Southview's athletic director of it upon its conclusion. Mayzes, who led Southview to the Division II state championship in 2008, declined comment, directing all inquiries to Rieger.

This is not the first time Mayzes has been reprimanded for recruiting. Last year the OHSAA found that he and Northview athletic director Chris Irwin attempted to recruit prospective students within district. Southview was fined $500 and placed on two years probation. A probation violation could have resulted in a postseason ban, although Rieger does not believe that will be the case. Southview's record is 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the Northern Lakes League after beating Bowling Green 28-14 on Friday night.

"Through my informal conversations with the OHSAA I've been told that most likely there will be another fine and also an extension of one year of the probationary period, and there won't be anything in addition to that," Rieger said.
