Special Events: This Week 1-30

Explore the ins and outs of stars and the story of the disappearing planet through two programs at Ritter Planetarium at the University of Toledo. Stars: The Powerhouses of the Universe is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays through Feb. 28. The program focuses on how stars are born, how they die, and how human understanding of them has changed over time. Audiences will explore nebulae, star clusters, pulsars, black holes, and more. A second program, The Case of the Disappearing Planet, looks into the changing status of planets in the solar system and begins at 1 p.m. on Saturdays through Feb. 22. Admission is is $7 for adults and $5 for children, seniors, and UT community members. Children under age 4 are free. Doors open 30 minutes before the show, during which time guest can explore the displays in the lobby or try to answer fun astronomy-themed questions projected inside the dome. Ritter Planetarium is on the first floor of the Ritter Astrophysical Research Center on UT's main campus.


■ The Mother's Center of Greater Toledo has teamed up with the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library to discuss children and social media. The event will feature guest speaker Kate Fineske, a mother of three and staff member of the National Association of Mothers' Centers, who will share the advantages and disadvantages of allowing kids to use social media and the use of privacy settings to help parents maintain some control and safety. The presentation is geared mostly toward parents of middle-school students, but all are welcome, as recent reports have stated that children start developing online relationships using social media by age 8. The discussion will take place from 7 to 8 tonight at the Sylvania Branch Library, 6749 Monroe St., Sylvania. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. ■ The Glass City Record Show will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Secor Road in Toledo. The event will feature dealers and their collections of vinyl, cassettes, CDs, and even 78s, 45s, and 33s. Other items on display and for sale include memorabilia, movies, DVDs, and posters.
