Capt. Jack Smith, who spent six months as Toledo s chief of police before resigning after a confrontation with Mayor Carty Finkbeiner, retired from the police force yesterday.
Captain Smith, 57, a 33-year department veteran, left the chief s job June 27. He replaced Chief Michael Navarre in January after then-Mayor-elect Finkbeiner said in December he thought the city would benefit from a new police chief.
Mr. Finkbeiner reappointed Chief Navarre to lead the department hours after Captain Smith stepped down as chief.
Captain Smith could not be reached for comment yesterday.
