A Toledo man was hurt critically Wednesday after he ran out into the roadway and was hit by a semi with an attached trailer, Toledo police said.

Truck driver Lloyd F. Gilbertson, 65, of Toledo, was southbound on the Anthony Wayne Trail about 7 a.m. when he saw a man run out of a back yard and onto the roadway, police said.

Mr. Gilbertson told police that he started to brake his vehicle when he saw the man, John L. Helton IV, 45, of Toledo run into the street. Mr. Helton was struck by the semi. He was taken to the University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio Hospital with critical injuries, police said.
