Assaulted inmate dies

3rd inmate to die from another at Toledo Correctional Institute within past year

An inmate who was assaulted Sunday at Toledo Correctional Institution died Wedneday in Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.

James Ray Oglesby, 32, was assaulted by another inmate in the facility's recreation yard, said Darlene Mitchell, a Toledo Correctional spokesman. He died at 2:30 p.m., she said.

She would not comment further, pending the outcome of an Ohio Highway Patrol investigation triggered by the assault.

“It's going to be an active homicide investigation now,” Ms. Mitchell said.

Authorities told Lucas County Coroner's investigators that Oglesby was struck on the head by an object, Dr. James Patrick, the county coroner, said. An autopsy is scheduled for today.

Oglesby was admitted to Toledo Correctional in May, 2006, after he was convicted in Lorain County on kidnapping and murder charges. He was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison on the murder conviction.

Earlier this month, Dustin Lynch, 26, a former Toledo Correctional inmate, pleaded not guilty to two counts of aggravated murder in the March 17 strangulation at the facility of inmate Arturo Lopez, 43. Lynch also pleaded not guilty in the felonious assault March 10 of inmate Christopher Trent, 40.

Last month, Lawrence Hensley, 44, pleaded guilty to aggravated murder in the Sept. 20, 2012, strangulation death at Toledo Correctional of inmate Brad Hamlin, 24.
