Man stabbed self before he jumped from bridge

BLADE STAFF

A Monroe man who jumped to his death Saturday had pleaded that authorities shoot him and plunged a knife into his chest before leading them on a chase that ended when he leaped from the Veterans’ Glass City Skyway, officials said.

Shane Holey, 31, fell 125 feet to the ground near the Maumee River’s east bank between the Skyway and the Craig Memorial Bridge. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:10 p.m., said Dr. Diane Scala-Barnett, Lucas County deputy coroner, who performed an autopsy Tuesday.

The death was ruled a suicide caused by blunt-force injuries from the fall. A clinical history of mental illness and a self-inflicted stab wound contributed, the coroner said.

Monroe County sheriff’s deputies received a report Saturday of a suicidal man with a knife.

Mr. Holey allegedly confronted officers in a Kroger parking lot in Monroe, pulled a knife, and yelled at them to shoot, Dr. Scala-Barnett said. He plunged the knife into his chest and drove away, initiating a pursuit.

Toledo police joined the chase after his vehicle entered the city. Once he got near the bridge, police said, he tried to drive off the Skyway and hit the bridge’s side. He then leaped through the passenger window and over the bridge’s side, landing on rocks yards away from the river’s East Toledo bank.
