Chinese woman, 22, killed in car-motorcycle collision near Sandusky

SANDUSKY -- A Chinese woman was fatally injured and two Sandusky men were hurt when a motorcycle and a car collided Sunday on U.S. 250 near this Erie County community, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

Xiaolan “Katie” Chen, 22, of the Guangdong Province in southern China, a passenger on the motorcycle, was taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky, and then to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, where she was pronounced dead, according to the patrol's Sandusky post.

Jerry Vara, 58, the driver of the motorcycle, and Robert Ciocca, 62, the driver of the car, were also taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center, where their conditions were not released.

The motorcycle was southbound on U.S. 250 near East Strub Road in Erie County's Perkins Township about 7:45 p.m. Sunday when it was struck by the Ciocca car, which was northbound on the highway, the patrol said. The crash occurred as Mr. Ciocca was turning left onto Parkland Drive, failing to yield to the motorcycle, which had the right of way, according to the patrol.

Mr. Vara and Miss Chen were ejected from the motorcycle, troopers said. They did not say whether the victims wore helmets.

There was no word on citations. The crash remained under investigation.

Sandusky is about 55 miles east of Toledo.
