911 operators get pay, benefits boost

Toledo City Council to vote on agreement between city, union

The Collins administration has agreed to give the city's 911 operators a raise and more sick time under an agreement approved today by city council.

The terms of the agreement, obtained today by The Blade, grants a 2.5 percent wage increase and increases sick days by another 2 1/2 days annually for a total of 10 for the 71 communications operators.

Toledo City Council voted 11-1 to approve the agreement with AFSCME Local 7 Communications Officers during a special meeting today. Councilman Tom Waniewski voted no.

The terms, which are retroactive to Jan. 3, revises the union's current contract that runs through June 30.

The union's contract called for a wage re-opener this year, said Toledo Chief of Staff Bob Reinbolt.

The union unanimously ratified the agreement Friday, Mr. Reinbolt said.

He could not immediately reveal how much the increase would cost the city.

The wage re-opener is the first agreement negotiated by the Collins administration. Mayor D. Michael Collins, a retired police officer and former district councilman, was the president of the police patrolmen's union for a decade.

The main AFSCME Local 7 unit, representing hundreds of city employees, also has a wage re-opener this year under its current contract, which expires on June 30.

Under existing agreements, rank and file firefighters who belong to Toledo Firefighters Local 92 will get 3.5 percent raises in August, battalion chiefs get 3 percent increases in January, and police officers get 3 percent pay raises in July.
