Eggs flew outside the Erie Street Market on Tuesday evening during a Republican event featuring gubernatorial candidate John Kasich and U.S. Senate candidate Rob Portman, and the local GOP is blaming Democrats.
Jon Stainbrook, chairman of the Lucas County Republican Party, said he saw broken eggs all over the sidewalk, but not the actual throwing. He said his party's headquarters at 10 South Superior St. also was egged.
Donald Iiams, Jr., a Republican at the event, said eggs were hurled at him by Democrats with signs promoting their candidates.
"That's very uncalled for," he said.
Mr. Stainbrook said no official complaint was filed and that police told him egg-throwing is only criminal mischief.
"But it's still criminal activity, and there's no reason for it," he said. "The Democrats are unhappy that the election isn't going their way."
Ron Rothenbuhler, chairman of the county Democrats, said he knew members of his party were outside the market during the event, but did not know that eggs were thrown.
"I didn't authorize or encourage any negative activity," he said.
