Detroit River wildlife refuge gaining 28.8 acres

The Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge is gaining 28.8 acres of wooded wetlands and uplands in Frenchtown Township. The property was purchased from the Newport Beach Marina Corp. for inclusion in the refuge, according to the office of U.S. Rep. John Dingell (D., Dearborn).

Officials are to announce the addition of the land today at a 1 p.m. news conference in Frenchtown Charter Township Hall, at 2744 Vivian Rd.

The land acquisition will extend an important wildlife corridor along western Lake Erie. The property was purchased by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
