A five-run third inning was the difference as the Indianapolis Indians beat the Toledo Mud Hens 5-2 on Tuesday night at Victory Field. The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for the Mud Hens.
What happened: Indianapolis broke through for five runs in the third inning against Toledo starter Kyle Dowdy. Adam Frazier, Jose Osuna, and Kevin Kramer had RBI doubles and Jordan Luplow and Christopher Bostick had run-scoring singles. The Hens scored in the top of the sixth, when Jim Adduci drove in Dawel Lugo and Ronny Rodriguez on a double.
Indianapolis starter J.T. Brubaker was solid in 5⅓ innings, allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks. The Indians got 2⅔ innings of scoreless relief from Jesus Liranzo and Josh Smoker before Bo Schultz pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.
Dowdy allowed seven hits, a walk, and five earned runs in 2⅔ innings. He added a strikeout. Kevin Comer, Zac Reininger, and Paul Voelker pitched the rest of the way for Toledo without allowing a run.
Game MVP: Osuna and Kramer each went 2 for 3.
Make a note of it: Coming into the game, Mud Hens infielder Ronny Rodriguez was No. 1 in the International League in slugging percentage (.549), extra-base hits (28), and total bases (118), and was second in batting average (.316), runs scored (35), and hits (68)...After Jacob Turner’s first start Monday, Toledo now has used 18 different starting pitchers this season.
Comings and goings: Before the game, the Detroit Tigers officially recalled catcher Grayson Greiner from Toledo. Kade Scivicque returned to Toledo from Double-A Erie as Greiner’s replacement at catcher.
A look ahead: The two teams will play at 1:35 p.m. Wednesday. The Hens will send left-hander Tyler Alexander (1-1, 6.75 ERA) to the mound, while right-hander Clay Holmes (4-3, 4.00 ERA) is set to start for Indianapolis.
