Swanton church readies for sesquicentennial

Trinity United Methodist Church at 213 N. Main St. in Swanton will observe its sesquicentennial in 2013 and has scheduled a year-long celebration. A potluck after the 10 a.m. worship service on Jan. 6 begins the festivities, and a rededication of the church in January, 2014, will complete the 150th-anniversary year.

Jana Broglin, chairman of the church’s 150th Committee, said a banner will be placed in front of the church celebrating Trinity’s 150 years of serving the community.

The church will have a special event each month in 2013. Included on the schedule is a homecoming in July at which former pastors and other dignitaries will be in attendance, combined with “an old-fashioned picnic in the park,” Mrs. Broglin said. The cornerstone of Trinity’s present building was dedicated in 1966.

“I went to the old church” that was built in 1892, Mrs. Broglin said. “My family’s been affiliated with Trinity definitely before 1920,” said Mrs. Broglin, a professional genealogist. The congregation first met June 1, 1863.
