The SeaGate Convention Centre, 401 Jefferson Ave., hosts the Christian Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses for the next three weekends. It is district convention time for the faith. A Spanish-language weekend started Friday and continues through Sunday, then English-language meetings will be held July 12-14 and July 19-21.
For the 3,500 to 4,500 people attending each weekend, “the main focus is to be spiritually fed,” said Mark Smith, a Toledo Jehovah’s Witnesses representative, “but they also utilize the city.” That means that during break times and after meetings, convention attendees will be in restaurants, hotels, and elsewhere in the city.
The convention’s theme is “God’s Word Is Truth!,” based on Christian scripture. Along with addresses and symposiums, dramatic presentations are part of the convention, and baptisms are held Saturday mornings. The meetings, 9:20 a.m. to about 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 9:20 a.m. to about 3:45 p.m. Sundays, are open to all, not just active members of the faith. Admission is free and no collection will be taken.
