Sandy Hook and Haiti

Crosswood Church, 126 Cheseerfield Lane in Maumee, is remembering the children, teachers, and principal who died in the Sandy Hook, Conn., school shooting, in a global way. It has dedicated the Sandy Hook School in Haiti, which has its grand opening this week. The church made a plaque with the names of those who died at Sandy Hook, to hang in the school. Sandy Hook School has space for 80 children, and two teachers, a principal, and a secretary are on staff.

Crosswood Church and its pastor, the Rev. Bill Sherman, will host a fund-raising event Saturday, Nov. 2, at 5 p.m. For more information, contact the church at 419-535-1173 or go to

Orthodox Outing

All four of the Toledo-area Pan Orthodox churches have canceled services at their churches for Sunday. That is so they can meet together with a combined Divine Liturgy Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Nederhouser Community Hall at Olander Park, 6930 Sylvania Ave., Sylvania.

The Rt. Rev. Anthony Michaels, bishop of the Diocese of Toledo and the Midwest Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America, and the Rt. Rev. Alexander Golitzin, bishop of Toledo and the Bulgarian Diocese of the Orthodox Church in America, will be at the service. A combined choir form the four chuches—Holy Trinity Greek Orthodix Cathedral in Toledo, St. George Antiochian Orthodox Chrisitan Cathedral in Toledo, St. George Orthodox Cathedral in Rossford, and St. Elias Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church in Sylvania—will chant the service.

Money from the book sale will benefit the church's community outreach. Prices for the meal are $7 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under. Both events end at 6:30 p.m., at which time the Rev. Rally Day itself is Sunday, Sept. 8, when there will be one church service at 10 a.m. and some food and festivities after. For more information, call the church at 419-882-0048.
