COLUMBUS - The School Employees Retirement System may proceed with a planned hike in health-care premiums for about 50,000 nonteacher retirees from Ohio schools.
Franklin County Common Pleas Court Judge Nodine Miller rejected a Dec. 31 recommendation from a court magistrate that a preliminary injunction requested by the Ohio Association of Public School Employees to halt the changes be granted.
The union - representing about 100,000 active custodians, food service, clerk, and other school employees - filed suit in an attempt to halt the reduction in health benefits, a step taken by several pension funds to reduce costs as fund investments took a beating in the stock market.
