State Rep. Teresa Fedor (D., Toledo) received a "Champion for Children" award from the National Exchange Club at its West Central Avenue headquarters.
Ms. Fedor sponsored Ohio's Safe Harbor Law, which increased penalties for adults who profit from underage prostitution and treats juveniles charged with prostitution as victims rather than delinquents.
The law allows victims to sue those who coerced them into prostitution and allows police to seize human traffickers' assets, upon conviction, to fund victims' services.
Members of the Exchange Clubs of the Greater Toledo area distributed posters across the city after the presentation Tuesday to promote the National Human Trafficking Resource Center hot line: 1-888-3737-888.
The Exchange Club adopted child-abuse prevention as its national project in 1979.
