Detroit Zoo home to new red panda twins

ROYAL OAK, Mich.  — New red panda twins are on view at the Detroit Zoo.

The zoo in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak announced today that the male twins were born June 27 to 8-year-old mother Ta-Shi and 4-year-old father Shifu.

The twins don’t yet have names. The zoo says they can be seen intermittently in their wooded habitat, though they spend most of the time in a nest box.

The twins’ birth marks the first time Ta-Shi and Shifu have produced offspring and the fifth time Ta-Shi has given birth since her arrival at the Detroit Zoo in 2008.

Shifu came to the Detroit Zoo last year with a breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan.
