Ohio Statehouse to boost security

Limit some access, search packages at entrances

COLUMBUS — Signs of forthcoming security changes are starting to show up at the Ohio Statehouse.

Visitors typically have been allowed to freely enter during business hours and roam the downtown Columbus building, which is monitored by the State Highway Patrol. Public access would be more restricted under a nearly $2 million plan to increase security.

The Columbus Dispatch reports one entrance has been closed. Signs have been posted at new desks at other entrances where the patrol is expected next month to begin searching packages that visitors bring with them.

House Speaker William Batchelder says cameras are being upgraded around the building, and one is being added outside the House chamber.

The Senate plans to restrict access to certain chamber entrances and the Senate president’s office.
