2 in custody in death of 17-year-old in Ypsilanti

YPSILANTI, Mich.  — Police in Ypsilanti say two people are in custody in the death of a 17-year-old boy who was shot at a party.

Detective Sgt. Tom Eberts told The Ann Arbor News Monday that one of them is the suspected shooter.

Eberts says the shooting followed an argument between two rival cliques that had been at odds with each other for some time.

The victim was Keon Washington, who was killed over the weekend.

His mother, Jamaica Washington, tells the newspaper her son was a colorful, athletic boy with a free spirit but who was not without troubles. Keon Washington would have entered his senior year at Henry Ford High School in Detroit this fall.

Jamaica Washington says it’s “hurtful” that Keon’s “precious life” is gone, “because he was awesome.”
