Walleye sign former college captain

The Toledo Walleye signed former college captain Josh Holmstrom today.

Holmstrom, a forward, wrapped up a four-year career at University of Massachusetts Lowell last season. Holmstrom was named the captain at UMass-Lowell prior to his senior season and scored seven goals to go along with 11 assists for 18 points in 41 games.

Holmstrom, a native of Colorado Springs, Colo., then turned pro at the end of 2013-14 season. He signed with Bridgeport of the American Hockey League and had one assist in seven games.

Over the course of four years at UMass-Lowell, the 24-year-old picked up 74 points (31 G, 43 A) in 154 games

“I really like the way Josh plays the game,” Walleye coach Derek Lalonde said. “He is a winner and leader.”

As a junior, Holmstrom finished with 25 points (12 G, 13 A) and helped lead the Riverhawks to the Frozen Four.
