Pizza, airplanes, and Big Time Rush — oh my



Pizza parlors across northwest Ohio will square off in a pizza making competition this weekend at Centennial Terrace in Sylvania. Over 12,000 people are expected to vote for their favorite pizza restaurant in the annual Pizza Palooza, which features a people's choice and judge's award.

The contest kicks off Friday and runs from 5 p.m. to midnight and 4 p.m. to midnight Saturday. Children's activities, including face painting, clowns, and activities from the Imagination Station and the Bouncy Thing are planned from 5 to 8 p.m. each day.

Pizza vendors will sell slices for $1.50 to $2 and musical acts Skoobie Snaks, Artic Clam, and Chris Shutters Band will perform Friday. Branden Stansley, Mt. Fuji and the Eruptions, Distant Couzins and Flabongo Nation will perform Saturday. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 5 to 12 and children younger than 5 are free. ■ The Fremont Progress Airport will celebrate its 50th anniversary Sunday, with food, music and festivities. Festivities will begin with a fly-in/drive-in pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the airport. Other features include a car show from 9 a.m. to noon and a living history display by North Coast Military Museum. Vintage wings and wheels will also be on site. Guests can take a ride in a Boeing-Stearman replica. Music will be provided by the North Coast Big Band starting at 11 a.m. Special guests include 1963 Miss America, Jackie Mayer, who attended the grand opening of the airport, and Red Tail Tuskegee Airman Dr. Harold Brown. The pancake breakfast is $6 and there's a $5 entry for the car show. All other events are free and open to the public. Information: 419 332-8037.

■ Nickelodeon superstars Big Time Rush will bring their Summer Break Tour to the Toledo Zoo Tuesday. The quartet of good-looking boys who star in the Nickelodeon TV series of the same name, will delight concert-goers with hits from its two albums, including the band's 2012 summer anthem "Windows Down." With almost 4 million singles sold, the band is currently working on its third album. The show begins at 7 p.m. and tickets are $85, $59.50 and $39.50, not including handling fees.
