Driver, 75, indicted in cycle crash
A 75-year-old man convicted two years ago for a fatal motorcycle accident has been indicted for a second motorcycle crash that injured a Sylvania Township woman.
A Lucas County grand jury yesterday indicted Everett Hargrove of Homer Street for negligent assault for a Sept. 9 accident on Sylvania Avenue, near McCord Road, in the township.
The panel was asked to consider the more serious charge of vehicular assault, but chose not to indictment him on the felony count. Negligent assault, a misdemeanor, is punishable by a jail sentence of up to 60 days.
John Weglian, chief of the special units division of the prosecutor’s office, said the case will be sent to Sylvania Municipal Court.
Nancy Hejl, 40, of Wild Pheasant Drive, lost her leg when Mr. Hargrove collided with her motorcycle. Ohio Highway Patrol troopers said Mr. Hargove pulled from a drive into the path of Mrs. Hejl’s westbound motorcycle.
On Aug. 12, 2001, Mr. Hargrove exited a private drive on U.S. 20 near Fayette, Ohio in Fulton County, killing motorcyclist Daniel Gfell, of Toledo.
He was convicted of vehicular homicide and received a three-month license suspension and a suspended 10-day jail sentence.
