Defiance County voters give thumbs-down to school issues
Defiance County voters were not in a mood to increase their taxes in yesterday’s primary election.
In unofficial tallies, the Edgerton school district’s 1 percent, 5-year, additional income tax for operations was defeated 58 percent to 42 percent in Defiance County.
The Williams County totals were not available.
Central Local Schools’ 3.94-mill, 28-year bond issue for school construction lost 54 percent to 46 percent.
Williams County totals for that district were unavailable.
The Defiance Public Library’s 0.5-mill, five-year, additional for operations lost 53 percent to 46 percent.
In Van Wert County, for county commissioner, Harold Merkle took the unofficial Republican nomination from William Ludwig.
The senior citizens’ social services levy through the Council On Aging, which includes transportation, information and referral services, passed handily, with 3,286 voting yes to 1,638 voting against it.
The levy is a 0.2-mill, five-year replacement levy.
In the Paulding County auditor’s race, Republican Lindsay Hefner beat Fred Pieper in a close race, setting up the fall battle against Democrat Susan K. Simpson.
For an unexpired term as county treasurer, Lou Ann Wannemacher defeated Rolland Clem in the Republican primary by a wide margin.
Mary Howard beat Robert Miller in the Democratic primary by a similarly wide margin.
Voters approved Antwerp schools’ 2.9-mill, five-year permanent improvement renewal; and Bridgewater Township’s 1-mill, five-year renewal for fire protection.
Voters in Cecil defeated a 7-mill, continuing, additional levy for fire apparatus and buildings.
Wayne Trace schools’ 0.75 percent, five-year income tax renewal was approved.
