The University of Toledo football team will play at the University of Florida in the season opener in 2013, UT Athletic Director Mike O’Brien announced today. The game will be played at Florida Field in Gainesville on Aug. 31, 2013.

Florida won the 2006 national championship with a 41-14 victory over then-No. 1 Ohio State. The Gators are a perennial contender for the national title and have appeared in 16 consecutive bowl games.

The Florida game is the latest in a string of high-profile matches for the Rocket football program. Toledo plays at Michigan in 2008, and has a home-and-home series with Ohio State, with the Rockets serving as the home team in 2009 in Cleveland and then playing at Ohio Stadium in 2011.

Other big matchups include a series with Arizona in which the Wildcats come to the Glass Bowl in 2010, a home game with Fresno State in 2008, as well as home-and-home series with Boise State, beginning with the Broncos coming to Toledo in 2009.
