2 treated for injuries after South Toledo fire
BLADE STAFF
An oxygen tube caught fire from a burning cigarette starting a house fire that injured a South Toledo couple Monday morning, authorities said.
Colnita Quisenberry and Donald Quisenberry, who are in their 60s or 70s, escaped from their 1½-story house at 1332 Walbridge Ave. near Western Avenue and Anthony Wayne Trail before fire crews arrived about 4:25 a.m., Toledo fire Battalion Chief Bill Hickey said.
The victims were then transported to the University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio Hospital, to be treated for smoke inhalation, the battalion chief said. Mrs. Quisenberry was in fair condition at the hospital about 7:30 a.m. Monday, by which time her husband had been released after treatment, a hospital spokesman said.
The fire started when Mrs. Quisenberry, who is on oxygen, was smoking in the first-floor bedroom at the back of the house, causing an oxygen tube to catch fire from her cigarette, Chief Hickey said.
The fire spread to some clothing and then throughout the room. Firefighters brought the blaze under control within about 45 minutes, the battalion chief said. He put the fire damage at about $25,000.
