    The 49th Martin Luther King, Jr. annual commemorative service at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia on January 16. The service also marked the 50th anniversary of MLK's speech, "A Time to Break Silence," in which he came out in opposition to the Vietnam War.

    Donzaleigh Abernathy, daughter of civil rights leader Rev. Ralph Abernathy, was the keynote speaker at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 2017 Unity Celebration at the University of Toledo's Savage Arena.

  • Monday Memories: Honoring a civil rights leader   Today is a federal holiday, commemorating the life of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.  This Blade photograph by Luke Black was taken Jan. 18, 1983, as Toledoans marched in honor of the slain civil rights leader. The procession route was from Lo Salem Missionary Baptist Church on Vance Street to the Martin Luther King Center on Nebraska Avenue. The march was preceded by a memorial service at the church, featuring a speech by Toledo Municipal Judge Charles Doneghy, and followed with a dinner for the marchers when they reached the center.  PHOTO GALLERY: Pictures of the Week, January 9-15, 2017  Mr. King was born Jan. 19, 1929. He was assassinated April 4, 1968, while on a civil rights mission in Memphis. But his dream of achieving racial equality and an integrated society continues today.

    First Presbyterian Church of Maumee hosted a Martin Luther King, Jr. commemoration worship service Sunday.

    Manor House at Wildwood Preserve

    The dining room of the Manor House at Wildwood Preserve Metropark features furniture that is close to the original used by the Stranahan family when they resided there. The house was built between 1936 and 1938. The park is offering free tours of the historic home on Sundays, noon to 5 p.m. January through March.

    On The Town: Starting the year out on the town

    The first week of the new year, many folks were resting and getting back in the swing of things after a long holiday season. It was not filled with any charity events, but people were not idly sitting home. They were out and about, dining just for fun at local establishments with friends, some whom were former Toledo-area folks home for a visit.

    For the past 20 years, the University of Toledo has participated in the Formula SAE program, where students engage in a “club” activity that allows them to create a Formula (open-wheeled) race car from scratch over two semesters.

    Dozens of people gathered to sing on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, at the home of the Eltatawy family in Sylvania Township. Earlier in the week someone had sprayed graffiti hate speech onto the family's garage door. It has since been painted over with a message of love.
