Photos of this year's annual MATHCOUNTS competition at the University of Toledo, on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2014. The event, which pits teams of local junior high and middle school students against math problems as teams and individuals, is put on by the Toledo Society of Professional Engineers. Three teams and an additional six students will advance to the state competition, which will be held on March 8, 2014, in Columbus.

Joe Boyle, a 39-year-old Bowling Green man, learned he had kidney cancer in 2011, roughly a year after he found a passion for running.
