ROCKWOOD, Mich. — Two young passengers were killed in a head-on collision Wednesday on US Turnpike Road at Labo Road in northern Monroe County near the Pointe Mouillee State Game Area, sheriff’s deputies said.
Deputies said Iris M. Wagenaar, 18, of South Rockwood, Mich., was northbound on US Turnpike at a high rate of speed when she lost control and crossed the center line into the southbound lane. The accident was reported at 3:05 p.m.
Her car collided with an SUV driven by Andrea Rose, 43, of South Rockwood. Both vehicles landed in a field on the west side of US Turnpike.
Pronounced dead at the scene were Morgan I. Wagenaar, 11, a front-seat passenger, and Peter S. Wagenaar, 17, who was seated in the rear, both of South Rockwood.
Also in the rear seat was Harley D. Wagenaar, 14, of South Rockwood, who with Peter was thrown from the vehicle.
Iris and Harley Wagenaar were taken to Oakwood Southshore Medical Center in Trenton where they were in critical condition late Wednesday, deputies said.
Ms. Rose was taken to Oakwood Southshore, where she was treated and released. Deputies said alcohol did not appear to be a factor.
