The month that concluded Saturday was the warmest March on record in Toledo — by far.

The monthly average mean temperature of 50.9 degrees smashed the old record, 47.7, set in 1945, according to the National Weather Service office in Cleveland.

A 3.2-degree difference may not seem like much, but in climatological terms, it’s huge.

The old difference between first and second place on Toledo’s Top 10 warmest Marches list was 1.1 degrees.

The normal average daily mean for March is 37.6 degrees.

The monthly record was driven by a two-week spell of exceedingly warm weather throughout the eastern United States that set numerous records.

For 15 straight days starting March 11, the high temperature in Toledo exceeded 60 degrees; the old local record for consecutive 60-degree days was eight, also set in 1945.

The nine consecutive 70-degree days starting on the 15th also set a record, as did the four 80-plus days that began on the 19th.

On March 21, Toledo had the warmest March day in its history when it reached 85 degrees — breaking an 83-degree high set on March 24, 1910 — and it tied the new record the next day.

The warm spell also was marked by occasionally violent weather — especially on the 15th, when several hail-producing thunderstorms struck Toledo.

To the north, a weak tornado touched down that afternoon in Ida, Mich., and a stronger, more destructive twister hit a subdivision in Dexter, Mich., west of Ann Arbor.

No one was injured by either tornado.

April also is expected to start off slightly warmer than normal in Toledo, too. Highs for the next few days are expected to be close to 60, compared with a norm of about 54.

Thunderstorms are possible Monday night and Tuesday, but skies are expected to be sunny during the day Monday and on both Wednesday and Thursday.
