CLEVELAND BROWNS

Browns look at benching Weeden

QB position a struggle for Cleveland since Vinnie Testaverde

BEREA, Ohio — Brandon Weeden's starting job is on shaky ground.

Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said Monday that he is considering a change at quarterback after Weeden struggled during Sunday's 31-13 loss at Green Bay.

Weeden had his second straight poor performance, and Chudzinski acknowledged during his news conference that "Brandon has to play better." However, Chudzinski said there are other issues — penalties, defensive breakdowns, and dropped passes among them — to consider and that he and his staff will evaluate all positions before making any lineup changes.

"We'll basically put the guys in positions who will give us the best opportunity to win," he said.

Making his fourth start this season, Weeden completed just 17 of 42 passes for 149 yards in the lopsided loss to the Packers. Unlike last week, when Chudzinski supported Weeden following a loss at home to Detroit, the coach was noncommittal and seems to be leaning toward starting backup Jason Campbell this week when the Browns (3-4) visit the unbeaten Kansas City Chiefs (7-0).

"It's not all Brandon, and that's the first thing you have to look at as you look at the tape and see," Chudzinski said. "There are some execution errors and issues with other guys. Brandon needs to play better, but we all need to play better around him."

Weeden returned to the lineup two weeks ago after Brian Hoyer, who led the Browns to wins over Minnesota and Cincinnati, suffered a season-ending knee injury against Buffalo. Weeden came off the bench and rallied the Browns to a victory over the Bills, but the 30-year-old has made bad decisions and some horrible throws in his last two starts.
