Wrangler 2nd on list of highest resale value

If you’re looking to buy a new vehicle that’s going to hold its value, bolder may be better.

Pickups and rugged truck-based sport utility vehicles dominated Kelley Blue Book’s annual resale value awards, claiming nine of the top 10 spots. The Toledo-built Jeep Wrangler ranked second this year, moving up one spot from 2014.

Kelley Blue Book looks at a number of factors to come up with its projected resale values after five years, including sales data, market conditions, and economic expectations.

This year’s top vehicle was the 2015 Toyota Tacoma pickup, which Kelley Blue Book said should retain more than 60 percent of its original value after five years of ownership and with 75,000 miles on the odometer.

The Wrangler was a very close second, with a projected residual value of 59 percent of its original cost. Third place went to the Toyota Tundra full-size pickup.

The Wrangler and four-door Wrangler Unlimited had the top respective resale value in the small SUV and midsize SUV segments.

As anyone who has shopped for used Wranglers can attest, the vehicle has been a resale value standout for some time. The vehicle has made the top 10 list five years in a row and has had the best resale value in its class for four years running.

With the vehicle more popular than ever — Fiat Chrysler sold a record 175,328 in the United States last year — that’s unlikely to change.

Eric Ibara, director of residual value consulting for Kelley Blue Book, noted that the Wrangler has gone from a niche vehicle to a well-regarded family hauler.

“I think Fiat Chrysler has recognized this and taken production up for the Wrangler, and in spite of that, it seems like they still haven’t met the consumer demand for that vehicle,” he said.

Trucks and SUVs have ruled Kelley Blue Book’s resale list over the last few years, and that’s especially true for 2015. The Honda CR-V, at No. 10, was the only crossover on the list. No cars made the top 10.

Mr. Ibara said low gas prices are a big reason for that.

“In that scenario, we think that consumers are going to prefer to drive larger vehicles, which means full-size trucks, midsize trucks, and crossovers,” he said, noting that Kelley Blue Book sees that demand continuing strong into the future.

Toyota had three vehicles in the top 10, though Subaru was named Kelley Blue Book’s top overall brand for residual value, breaking Toyota’s three-year reign atop the list.

Subaru’s Impreza was named best resale value among compact cars, while the Legacy took the top spot among midsize cars. Kelley Blue Book said Subaru's nearly universal all-wheel-drive, reliability, and pragmatic approach to design helped it snare the top spot.

The Wrangler was the only Fiat Chrysler product to make the top 10, though Kelley Blue Book did name the Dodge Charger as having the best resale value among full-size cars.

Released Friday, the Kelley Blue Book residual value awards differed slightly from that of ALG, the industry’s other benchmark residual value listings.

ALG puts both the Wrangler and the Toledo-built Jeep Cherokee in the off-road utility vehicle segment. That segment was topped by the Toyota 4Runner. The Wrangler was second and the Cherokee was third.

ALG named Toyota as its top brand for resale values.
