Style is in bloom this spring

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial signal to get out your summer whites and other warm-weather attire. Leading up to this season were many fashion shows for fun and for fund-raising.

■PHASHION of the Opera presented by the Toledo Opera Guild at the Toledo Club was filled with fashions, shopping, and Phantom of the Opera music. May Coppler, a Notre Dame Academy student, sang a Phantom tune, and VIP Models sported Phantom costumes and masks. Ragazza, Vivian Kate, Elegant Rags, Costume Holiday House, Blue By Atlas Bridal Shop, Swimsuits by Josie Wills, and Sophia Lustig Shop provided fashions. Maya Ramirez, Project Runway Jr. winner and a Toledo School for the Arts student, showed three of her recent designs. James Schwann, son of guild member Traci Schwann, won the top VIP Model trophy.

Event chairman Becky Gannon with co-chairman Katie Maskey reported about $22,000 was raised. Among the 250 attendees was guild president Shelli Jacobs.

■ST. LUKE'S Hospital Auxiliary Fashionation Style Show All That Jazz, with fashions from Elder-Beerman, was at Belmont Country Club with commentators Tony Geftos and Christina Williams of WTVG-TV, Channel 13, Jean Emery, auxiliary president, and Birdie Alfaro of Elder-Beerman.

Auxiliary members, hospital staff, and community leaders strutted in style including Brandon Loboschefski, Maumee fire chief, who won a pampering package raffle prize that got a chuckle from the audience. Dr. Tim Mattison, chief of staff, won the 50/50 raffle and donated it back. Also seen were Dan Wakeman, hospital president, and Scott Rupley, marketing director, in purple, which is the new hospital color.

The money raised will help toward the purchase of a 3-D mammography machine using tomosynthesis technology, said event chairmen Nan Bye and Barbara Dennis. Sponsors included Dr. Stephen and Cathy Bazeley and Degage Jazz Cafe and Langley Hall.

■AMY'S Allie ladies boutique hosts semi-annual fall and spring Style & Swirl nights of fashion, wine, hors d'oeuvres, door prizes, and live music at M' Osteria. Each event raises about $500 for the Zepf Center.

■SHADES of lavender set the scene for Scintilla: Strolling into Spring presented by the Garden Club Forum of the Toledo District Inc. The club's area garden club members modeled fashions from Ragazza and Bowinkles. Raffle baskets and vendor booths for the 132 guests added fun. More than $3,200 was raised for the Toledo Botanical Garden intern program and scholarships. Jeanette Fairman, chairman, was assisted by Gerry Crouse, Maria Gardiner, Kitty Gibson, Kathy Nelsen, Susan Utterback, Marilyn Welborn, and Mona Macksey, president.

■VIVE Volunteers! fashion show and luncheon for ProMedica Flower Hospital Auxiliary at Highland Meadows Golf Club highlighted fashions from Chico's. Models included Mary Helen Darah and mother Sue Scheib; Patricia Hilfinger and daughter Sue Brue; Norene Drewicz and others. Dr. Neeraj Kanwal, hospital president, thanked the auxiliary for all they do. Among the committee members were longtime volunteers Pauline Tate and Cookie Westmeyer. Auxiliary president Barbara Baumgartner turned the gavel over to incoming president Amy Klosterman.

■CHIC Women of Music: Fashion Icons Featuring A Salute to Motherhood, Community Service, Scholarships, and Fashions was presented by the Toledo Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. It was the 38th annual Breakfast for M'Lady held at the Pinnacle. Senator Edna Brown was named Mother of the Year. Among the more than 300 attendees were Wanda Terrell-Galloway, event chairman, and Angela Siner, president.

Scholarships were awarded to Jada Boles, Toledo School of the Arts; Ryonna Birchfield, Notre Dame Academy; Daijah Blackburn, Rogers High School, and Taylor Coleman, Central Catholic High School.

■ST. ELIAS Ladies Society Style Show: Sleek, Chic, and Unique at St. Elias Orthodox Church featured fashions from Ragazza and Bowinkles, accessories by Brighton Collectibles, and hair by Reve Salon and Spa. There were shopping opportunities, mini massages, and raffles for the 225 attendees who dined on a Byblos lunch.

Nearly $6,000 was raised according to event chairmen Elaina Kfouf and Linda Yazji. Sponsors included Toledo Clinic Cardiology Department, Dr. Ziad Tohme of Toledo Periodontics, and Toledo chiropractor Nickalis Dumas of Rapid Relief Chiropractic Center.

■CRUISING into Spring and Summer, the mother/daughter luncheon and fashion show hosted by New Life Church of God in Christ Women's Ministry, was held at Ramada Inn Secor. First lady Sheila L. Cook thanked everyone including Terrie Cook, event chairman, and Sheila A. Cook, moderator.

■STYLE in the City: An Evening of Style, Shopping, and Spa and Salon Services presented by Ragazza and Reve Salon and Spa and held at Reve bustled with fun. Ladies nibbled and noshed as models paraded about in togs from Ragazza, and were pampered with facials, massages, hair, makeup, and manicures and pedicures. The money raised benefited the Aurora Project for homeless women and their children.

■THE Village of Whitehouse hosted a Ladies Only Fashion Show Fund-raiser at Whitehouse Village Hall. The afternoon included desserts and coffee, a silent auction, and fashion show by Blue Layne Boutique on-line shop with offices in Whitehouse. The $1,757 raised went to Bethany House for domestic violence victims.

■STONE Oak Garden Club's Fashion and Flowers luncheon at Stone Oak Country Club included fashions from Ragazza of Sylvania and Perrysburg with owner Jane Wurth and Bowinkles children's clothier, owned by Mrs. Wurth's daughter, Stephanie Pilgrim. Event chairmen were Arlene Whelan and Toni Zammit.
