Castile sent to psychiatric hospital for treatment

Editor’s note: This article corrects Denzel Castile’s age to 21 and fixes a mistake in the verdict in story and headline.

SANDUSKY — A judge has found a 21-year-old man not guilty by reason of insanity in the fatal stabbing of his infant cousin.

After reaching his verdict today, Judge Tygh Tone of Erie County Common Pleas Court sent Denzel Castile to the Northwest Ohio Psychiatric Hospital in Toledo for treatment.

Castile, a former University of Toledo student, was suffering a mental illness when he stabbed 11-week-old Athena Castile in a relative's home in May, 2013, authorities said.

Specifications that allowed for the death penalty were dismissed by the county prosecutor before Castile's bench trial. The removal of the specifications allowed the case to be heard by Judge Tone instead of a three-judge panel.
