Interim principal checking details

The energetic young guy putting in long hours at Northview High School is the new interim principal.

He's Steve Swaggerty, who has been on the job since Aug. 1 and is immersing himself in the details of the school's myriad building projects and operations, determined to learn all of them before the teachers and freshmen return Aug. 29 and the upperclassmen Sept. 1.

There's a lot to assimilate, but Mr. Swaggerty, 33, expresses confidence. "I know I'm joining a strong team," he said.

He has a staff of 110, including 82 teachers, and said he plans to get to know every one of them.

"The big thing is getting to know everybody and getting to know what it means being the principal of Northview," said Mr. Swaggerty, whose salary is $103,293.

Superintendent Brad Rieger, for his part, said the right person was appointed to the job.

"Steve brings a strong instructional background and collaborative leadership approach. His desire to make personal connection with students, staff, and parents anchors his educational philosophy," he said.

Mr. Swaggerty replaces Stewart Jesse, who resigned in late July by mutual agreement with the Board of Education.

Mr. Jesse's tenure at Northview came into question last year when parents and teachers rallied in his support at a board meeting after hearing that school officials were considering not renewing his contract.

The contract was renewed, but for two years instead of the three years other administrators received. The district did not release the terms of the separation agreement with Mr. Jesse and were not specific about the reasons for his departure.

Much has been done at Northview over the summer, but parts of the building remain a construction site.

The school has a new theater with scene shop and new choir and orchestra rooms. New lockers will be installed by the time students return.

Mr. Swaggerty has been in education for 10 years, the past eight at the Sylvania schools. Before coming to Northview, he was assistant principal at Timberstone Junior High and an advanced placement social studies teacher at Southview High School, where he was assistant varsity basketball coach and assistant athletic director.

He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in education at Bowling Green State University and is a graduate of Central Catholic High School. He and his wife, LeighAnn, live in Sylvania Township.
